Spikes in the frequency of unplanned road events in the first trimester

The American Trucking Associations Technology & Maintenance Council said the council’s first quarter 2021 TMC / FleetNet America vertical benchmarking program revealed an industry-wide increase in maintenance frequency. unforeseen road.

“As the economy improves as the second half of 2021 approaches, fleets need to be vigilant in their maintenance practices to minimize unscheduled road repairs. Our data shows that the best performing fleets do and others can benefit from industry recommended practices, such as those offered by TMC, ”said TMC Executive Director Robert Braswell.

The TMC / FleetNet America survey found that in the first quarter of 2021, fleets averaged 29,506 miles of operations between unscheduled road repairs, down 18.7% from the fourth quarter of 2020. of the previous quarter. The time between breakdowns for LTL carriers fell 18.7% to 44,380 miles in the first quarter from 54,556 in the last quarter of 2021. The tanker industry saw a slight improvement, covering 17,420 miles in the first quarter. quarter, compared to 19,905 in the previous quarter. .

“The data tells us that if, for example, truck hauliers traveling the average miles between breakdowns could achieve best-in-class performance, they would increase their miles between breakdowns by 89%,” Emily Hurst, Data Manager and of analysis at FleetNet America, said. “And that would translate into lower costs overall.”

The data indicates that the best performing fleet maintenance practices in each vertical sector have resulted in lower costs for those fleets. For example, the leading tank vertical fleet traveled twice as many miles between roadside failures than the tank vertical average.

Understanding the frequency of roadside breakdowns and how a fleet’s experience compares to similar operations can help maintenance managers identify opportunities to improve their operations and reduce their maintenance expenses.

The TMC / FleetNet vertical benchmarking program is a benefit for TMC fleet members. In addition to the summary, which is available to TMC members, fleets that participate by sharing their data receive an analytics tool that allows them to explore their data, comparing it to the industry average.
