Markets

Markets got off to a slow start to the trading week yesterday as American investors were absent due to Martin Luther King’s vacation. In other major developed markets, news flow was thin. European equities were somewhat reassured by China’s easing policy. European indices closed with gains of around 0.50 to 0.75%. The default trend in European interest rate markets also remains north even without guidance from across the Atlantic. German rates rose between 2.2 basis points (2 years) and 1.3 basis points (30 years). German 10-year yields again hit a high of 0.02% / the psychological barrier of 0.0%. The dollar rose slightly, with DXY closing at 95.26 and EUR/USD at 1.1408.

This morning the Bank of Japan left its policy unchanged but changed its assessment of inflation (see below). Still, any speculation about a change in policy is likely premature. Japanese yields are little changed. USD/JPY immediately after the decision moved from the 114.50 area to the 115 area, suggesting markets were positioned for a more hawkish stance. Outside of Japan, a sharp rise in US yields as trading resumes after the MLK holiday is attracting attention. Fed governors are no longer allowed to give guidance on policy as they are in the blackout period ahead of next week’s policy meeting. This does not prevent the markets from anticipating a bolder action from the Fed. The US 2-year yield jumps north of 1.0% (currently 1.05%), the highest since late February 2020. The 10-year yield tops the cycle peak by 1.80% (currently 1.84 %). Rising yields are leading to losses, albeit mostly modest, in Asian stock markets. China is the exception to the rule (CSI 300 +0.7%) as markets ponder the possibilities of another PBOC stimulus. Still, the yuan (USDNCY 6.3425) is holding its own after hitting a new cycle high overnight.

Later today, German ZEW Economic Sentiment should improve slightly from 29.9 to 32.0. In the United States, the Empire Manufacturing is expected to drop from 31.9 to 25, but this is still a high level. We don’t expect today’s data to change the policy normalization debate. The key question is whether US investors will join in the Asian bond sell-off. Markets are now pricing in four 25 basis point hikes from March and some investors are debating the chances of a 50 basis point hike at the start. The general trend could propel the German 10-year yield into positive territory. The other question is whether the dollar will benefit from the continued normalization of the market frontloading policy. At least this morning, the dollar’s gains are again modest even if the stock indexes point to losses at the European open. In the United Kingdom, labor market data this morning were close to expectations (3 months of employment in November weaker than expected at 60,000; the unemployment rate fell to 4.2% and wages rose by 4.2% as expected). In a first reaction, EUR/GBP remains in the 0.8355 area.

News headlines

The Bank of Japan has not changed the policy parameters which include buying bonds, a policy rate of -0.10% and a 10-year yield target of 0%. However, for the first time since 2014, it changed the inflation risk balance from mostly on the downside to balanced, meaning the BoJ sees equal risks for prices to breach the target. The move came after Reuters, citing sources, reported last week that the BoJ was debating how to start communicating on a possible rate hike, even if inflation remains below target. The latter is still the case in updated forecasts which, although raised, show inflation well below 2% (1.1% for the 2022 and 2023 financial years). Growth in FY21 (through April) has been revised down from 3.4% to 2.8%, but is estimated to be 3.8% in FY2022 (vs. 2.9%) on Omicron, which is delaying the recovery. The Japanese yen lost ground, with some investors perhaps expecting more given the Reuters report. USD/JPY is trading at 114.82.

During yesterday Eurogroup meeting, several finance ministers in the euro zone raised the issue of inflation (5% in December). They warned that this affected purchasing power and therefore economic growth. Eurogroup Chairman Donohoe at a press conference later said high inflation would indeed last longer than initially expected, but added he was confident price pressures would begin moderate later in the year as supply chains continue to improve and the effects of forced savings accumulation due to lockdowns begin to wane. The Eurogroup also discussed business vulnerability and structural changes after the pandemic, the draft recommendation on economic policy for 2022 and the banking union.

One of the most comforting sounds to me is the iconic dun dun sound at the beginning of a Law and order episode.

In fact, this sound comforts me so much that reruns of Law and order are the only TV I want to watch when I’m home sick. I guess some people need chicken noodle soup; I prefer crime. I am not alone in this emotional reaction to police procedures.

While it’s true that true crime had a moment (i.e. “true crime, glass of wine, bed nine”), crime fiction has long captured our attention since Edgar Allen Poe’s short story”The Rue Morgue Murders.” At first glance, a fascination with the worst in humanity might seem a little odd, but the genre’s appeal is less about darkness and chaos and more about restoring order and justice. Is it any wonder that I’ve read so many mystery novels in recent years?

Crime fiction and true crime appeal to readers who enjoy solving puzzles and are curious about what’s going on below the surface. They might enjoy uncovering clues to a mystery alongside an investigator – or beating said investigator to find the solution. Other readers want to explore the psychological aspects of a criminal mind. And, of course, there’s always something to be said for pure escapism – one of the main reasons many of us read for pleasure in the first place.

I read so much excellent crime novels last year. here is a listing titles that were among my favorites. And below are some of my favorite mystery and psychological thriller authors:

Laura Lipman
A former crime reporter Baltimore Sun, Lippman’s work is a clever mix of detective and psychological procedural suspense. She has gained a dedicated readership with her Tess Monaghan series and has many stand-alone novels as well. Monaghan is a former journalist-turned-PI who works on the details of the crimes while rowing every morning on Baltimore’s Patapsco River. She’s also my favorite fictional detective.

Elly Griffiths
Elly Griffiths is a pen name for Domenica de Rosa, who her agent told she needed a “criminal name” after reading her debut novel by Ruth Galloway, Passage places. Dr Ruth Galloway is a university professor of archeology whose small village appears to be a hotbed of unidentified human remains. Griffiths wrote additional series, including a new favorite, the Novels by Harbinder Kaur. His novels are mostly set in rural England and are atmospheric and haunting.

Attica Locke
Attica Locke’s novels are set in Texas and Louisiana and focus on issues of racial injustice. Texas Ranger Darren Matthews is the protagonist of his novels Highway 59, the award-winning Bluebird, Bluebird and Heaven, my home. The cinematic style of Locke’s novels comes as no surprise, as she wrote for the TV shows Empire, When they see us and Small fires everywhere.

Shari La Pena
Shari LaPena’s novels would probably be categorized as suspense as opposed to mysteries, if you look for them in a bookstore or library. I’ve been a big fan of her since I read The couple next door. Its “pulled from the headlines” plot centers on Marco and Anne Conti’s decision to leave their six-month-old baby at home while they attend a dinner party at the next door neighbours. When they return home to find their door ajar and baby Cora missing, their private lives become very public.

Crime fiction is an umbrella term and contains almost countless subgenres. Whether you’re drawn to intimate mysteries with amateur sleuths and recipes, or gritty, gritty crime novels, the allure of reading something with clear demarcations between good and evil and the promise of resolution is easy to understand. in these times.

So embrace the obsession. Put on your favorite pajamas, grab a hot drink and settle in for a winter of Law and ordercomfort styling!

GREAT FALLS – Toby’s House Crisis Nursery in Great Falls reports that it is seeing an increase in the number of families approaching their doors. The nursery, which opened a little over a year ago, is named in honor of October “Toby” Perez. She was two years old when she was killed by her mother’s boyfriend in 2011. A decade later, the nursery established in her honor is working to help children in similar situations.

Susie Zeak, principal of Toby’s House Crisis Nursery, said: “We probably get at least three calls a week from parents who have experienced some kind of violence in their home. What we see the most is physical abuse and a lot of neglect. happening in our community. Children deserve to have a good childhood, to be carefree, to play, to laugh and have fun. And when children see violence in their homes, when they hear that they are victims of violence, taken with them into adulthood. “

While receiving an increasing number of phone calls and families seeking sanctuary, Toby’s House aims to give hope to those in need.

Zeak explained, “For children to be resilient, they need to have adults around them who support them, who support them, who love them and who are kind. right there for them. “

As victim support services have grown, the increase in the number of abused families remains a constant problem.

Toby’s House posted on Facebook:

Last month we took care of an adorable girl who had the biggest and most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. I had just come into work and after dropping my things off I introduced myself to the little girl. She didn’t say much but I made sure she knew she was in a safe place. His mother had called us to need our services for the day. Mom was beaten by her husband while their daughter was watching.

We are getting more and more calls like this. Moms, dads and even grandparents who need our help because of violence in the home.

We pride ourselves on being able to help families when they need help with their children. We are even more proud that we can provide a place for children where they can be safe and just be kids.

Jamie Marshall, Dandelion Foundation Board Member, said: “The topic of child safety is always an important topic to discuss. Toby’s house is a wonderful resource that our community has now and maybe more and more famous, and people are taking advantage of that, which is the whole purpose of Toby’s House is to be used as preventative measure.”

Marshall continued, “Science definitely proves that there is a change in the science of the brain when children are neglected, abused in any form. It changes an individual. This trauma is significant.”

The crisis crèche provides short-term care for children brought in voluntarily by a parent or legal guardian. There are many reasons people use emergency child care for temporary child care or respite, including:

  • There is no safe place a child can stay while solving personal problems
  • Someone is not able to take care of their child as they would like
  • An important date but a safe person to leave a child with
  • When stress and life issues become too hard to tolerate and could lead to a child or when someone feels like they are losing control
  • Medical emergencies where a caregiver needs immediate assistance with temporary childcare
  • Mental health, substance abuse crisis
  • Respite for foster parents

The services provided by Toby’s House Crisis Nursery are free and do not require any qualifications.

MT. COMFORT – A family from Mt. Comfort Elementary School received a new furnace just in time for Christmas thanks to local bus drivers and Butler MK Heating and Air.

Elementary school bus drivers go to great lengths to help a family in need every Christmas, and last month they heard about a family who was heating their house with radiators because their device heater was beyond repair and they couldn’t afford a new one.

Bus drivers contacted Gabe Muterspaugh, Mt. Vernon tennis coach and co-owner of Butler MK Heating and Air. The team assessed the family home and had a new furnace installed in less than a week.

COLLINGDALE – Longtime Delaware County resident Robert “Bob” Siliani has faced many challenges in his life. One of the most important has been figuring out how to cope after losing his beloved wife Josephine in 2016, after 62 years of happily married to her best friend.

“Without Josephine, I felt really empty and heartbroken,” said Siliani. “Losing my wife was the most difficult battle I have faced in my life. One morning I woke up and remembered something my wife told me. She said that ‘ one day I would come back to art.

Shortly after recalling his wife’s premonition, Siliani put a brush on the canvas and hasn’t stopped since. To date, the artist has created 440 original paintings, selling many and donating others to charity. What started out as a vital hobby quickly turned into an enjoyable career.

“When I was a kid I loved painting as a hobby, but after I became an adult I was always busy with my job and raising a family, so I never took it back even though I did. always liked it, ”he said. declared.

Saliani, who lived in Collingdale for 37 years before recently moving into her daughter’s West Chester home, turned 87 on Tuesday, surrounded by family and an assortment of award-winning artwork that the talented artist creates for five years.

The talented octogenarian’s preferred medium is oil and he enjoys painting landscapes, seascapes, animals, architectural and religious art.

Saliani exhibits in various juryed art and craft exhibitions every year, with the help of his son Steven, who drives, transports the art and gives his father a hand in setting up the exhibition, among other things. exposure tasks. They bring around forty works to exhibit at each exhibition.

“I couldn’t do any of this without my son Steven,” the artist explained.

“I couldn’t be happier doing this for my dad,” Steven said in response. “Seeing my dad at 87, with all his arthritis, doing these beautiful paintings and enjoying them so much has inspired us all. “

Due to the pandemic, the duo only exhibited at three or four art festivals last year. However, even with the discounts, Siliani sells at least eight of his paintings at each exhibition.

The duo look forward to exhibiting at the tenth annual Malvern Retreat House Art Show, February 2-6. This will be the fourth year that Saliani will exhibit part of his work in the prestigious exhibition.

Saliani has won numerous awards for his work, including the First Place Overall ribbon at the Media Arts and Craft Show, sponsored by Town Talk Newspapers.

Siliani has also expanded to do order work across the country, as well as for customers in Switzerland and Italy.

“Thanks to my website and my Facebook page, I can now say that I am creating art on an international scale,” said Siliani.

“People see my work and then contact me to discuss ordering from me for a painting they want to do. “

He made two paintings of the Swiss Alps, as well as a city in Italy so realistic that a third could identify the exact location of the painted scene. He was recently commissioned to paint an award-winning horse for his owner after the horse competed in the top three races in the country.

The artist, who has never taken a single art class, explains that he painted more than 200 paintings before developing his own style.

“You have to paint frequently to discover your personal artistic style,” said Siliani. “I have never started a painting and given up. I think a lot about each piece before picking up a brush.

When asked to categorize his style, the talented artist thinks for a few minutes before responding: “contemporary impressionist”. Now that he’s found his style, he paints much faster, often painting a picture in a single day, working 12 hours or more.

“No matter what I paint, I have to be inspired,” said Siliani. “I have to feel passionate and excited about what I’m painting – feel it inside of me.”

The largest painting he has ever made to date measures 30 by 20 inches. When he first started painting he used a photograph to learn the process, but now he sketches a freehand prototype before painting it on canvas.

“When my uncle Bob started painting, he put all his dedication to his wife Joséphine into each of his paintings. He started with this first painting and didn’t stop, ”commented Leah Siliani, Robert’s great-niece. His late grandfather was Robert’s twin brother. “He has a huge heart full of passion for what he does. “

The artist has a creative background. After graduating from Upper Darby High School and marrying his beloved Josephine, Siliani enlisted in the military as a sergeant, Corps of Engineers. During his years in the military, Siliani taught junior officers at Camp Pickett in Virginia. Upon returning to civilian life, Siliani accepted a civil engineering designer position for Gannett Fleming Corddry and Carpenter, where he worked for 36 years. After his retirement, he worked in road signage with Orthodgers and Associates for 14 years, followed by part-time employment with Allied Security.

Robert has three children, Robert Siliani of Bethlehem, Steven Siliani of Hatfield and Maria Gallagher of West Chester, as well as eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Prior to painting, Siliani enjoyed working with wood, selling his designs of small furniture, cedar chests, picture frames and more, mostly through word of mouth. He once appeared in the Delaware County Daily Times after constructing a special mahogany veteran display cabinet for the family of a deceased Vietnam veteran to honorably display his medals and other valuables. Siliani was forced to give up woodworking due to worsening arthritis, so he was happy to replace it with another creative endeavor.

“I’ve been a designer my whole life,” said the octogenarian. “You have to know what you want to do and stick to it. “

When not creating art, Siliani enjoys watching the Eagles, Phillies and Flyers, as well as spending time with his family.

“When I paint or discover something that I want to paint, I get excited all the time,” said Siliani. “I really appreciate the art world. “

President Joe Biden heads to Colorado to bring comfort to residents struggling with the reconstruction of homes and businesses destroyed last week by a rare winter fire

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden on Friday pledged to bring comfort to Colorado residents struggling with rebuilding homes and businesses destroyed last week by a rare wind-whipped winter fire that swept through a pair of suburbs heavily populated between Denver and Boulder.

Two people are still missing out of some 35,000 people driven from their homes.

Biden and his wife, Jill, were traveling to Boulder County to assess the damage. The president was scheduled to meet with Governor Jared Polis and local officials who oversaw the aftermath of the blaze, as well as residents affected by the blaze, and deliver remarks.

Before leaving the White House, Biden described the destruction as “horrible to God.”

The fire broke out exceptionally late in December after months of drought with a dry fall and very little snow in winter. Almost 1,100 buildings, mostly houses, were destroyed, causing damage estimated at $ 513 million.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Investigators limited their search for the cause to an area near Boulder where a passer-by captured video of a burning hangar on December 30, when the blaze started. But it could still take authorities weeks to figure out how it started.

Most of the destroyed buildings were houses. But the fire also burned down eight businesses in Louisville and neighboring Superior. Federal, state, and local agencies and nonprofit organizations provide housing assistance, counseling, food, allowances, and other assistance to residents.

Last year, Biden made several trips to study the aftermath of weather events, including ice storms in Houston, wildfires in California, and flooding in New York and New Jersey.

In mid-December, he visited residents of Dawson Springs, Ky., After a series of tornadoes swept through that state and seven others, killing dozens.

After inspecting the scene in Colorado, Biden and the first lady were due to travel to Las Vegas to attend Saturday’s funeral for Harry Reid, the former Senate Majority Leader.

Reid died last week after a years-long battle with cancer at the age of 82. He and Biden had served together in the Senate.

Tony Hale was born on September 30, 1970, which makes him a kid of the 70s, but also someone who could very easily enjoy the children’s entertainment of the 80s. And you could argue that the 1980s are the most child-centric of all time. “Transformers,” “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” “GI Joe,” and the first two seasons of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” essentially spawned cartoons as a way to sell the toy movement – but hey, they were fun, too!

However, some of the most beloved childhood entertainment comes in the form of movies featuring kids doing things they’re not supposed to do, including running away, smashing things, and cursing like sailors. The movie that combines all of these things and adds a pirate ship full of buried treasure is the one Tony Hale mentioned as one of his favorite comfort movies.

“Goonies” is always a heartwarming movie for me, because I just remember it from my childhood, ”Hale says.“ The main guy. [Mikey as played by Sean Astin] i had asthma and i have asthma and he was carrying his inhaler with me and i always connected [with] him.”

“The Goonies” is one of those movies that defined the 1980s – and it doesn’t hurt that it stars people like Martha Plimpton, Sean Astin and Thanos himself, Josh brolin. If you haven’t watched it recently (or never, somehow), it’s definitely worth a visit and was recently re-released in 4K UHD.

“Poupelle of Chimney Town” is now playing in select theaters.

I have been sleepless for most of the summer and not just from the sweltering heat. Two friends died from Covid-19 and my short, voluntary career break seemed like a bad decision. A series of dark and white nights passed before a music app suggested a solution. The songs were playing in shuffle mode when Wallowa Lake Monster by American singer and songwriter Sufjan Stevens came. You may know him to compose Mystery of love – the anthem of the film Call me by your name.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say Wallowa Lake Monster cured my insomnia. But it was the perfect lullaby that made it easier for me to sleep.

The song tells the tragic story of a mother by drawing parallels with a biblical creature, the Leviathan, who sleeps at the bottom of a lake. It wasn’t the misfortune of the fictional characters that put me to sleep – I’m certainly not morbid. It was the way the story was told, in a calm, firm tone with dramatic instrumental interludes that blocked the anxiety in my mind.

The more I listened to the song, the more it grew in me. In one case, it brought up childhood memories involving friends and a lake inside the Shivaji University campus in my hometown of Kolhapur. We drove to its shore to play stories. Our group of friends would participate in imaginary battles in which we would fight monsters and find portals to other supernatural dimensions.

As he grew up, these antics were replaced by sports. But the lake stayed close to my heart. I read there for hours as a teenager, exploring the many mysteries of Agatha Christie and devouring most of the books in the Harry Potter series. I always make a point of visiting the lake.

During this time, Wallowa Lake Monster stayed with me for six months. It’s still the most played song on my playlist and it will probably stay there for a long time for the comfort it gave my restless mind.
